When (in)courage gives me courage...

-->
I’m sitting here in the still quiet of the morning with my mind reeling from the emotional ups & downs of this weekend.

After weeks of pushing the possibility of watching the (in)courage (in)RL weekend out of my mind, because I knew it wasn’t an option after recovering from surgery & I would have tons of things to do, God told me through a worn out body & thirsty spirit late Friday afternoon to register & watch in the comfort of my own home. So I listened & obeyed.
Early Saturday morning I awoke, fixed a cup of coffee & settled in for what I thought was an hour of hearing about a girlfriend’s weekend at the beach.
What I experienced was a day of God’s loving arms wrapping Himself around me in a big warm embrace whispering in my ear, “I love you my daughter, feel my presence, feel my strength, feel my protection, feel my love. I am with you & I will encourage you, I will give you courage.”
Although I was alone watching the webcast I NEVER felt alone. As I listened to the blog posts and the messages shared by so many of the women I caught a glimpse of my reflection in my computer screen, tears streamed down my face as I listened to stories of ladies who have walked the same path & experienced the same hurts & fears I have experienced.
As Teri Lynne Underwood shared her story of staying in community & in the spotlight when all she wanted to do was run I thought, “Finally someone understands the gripping fear & pain I have felt!” There have been days when I felt the glare of the spotlight focused directly on me while inside my heart & mind were screaming, “God take this spotlight off of me! Please let me serve you somewhere else! Please just let me runaway!” But, instead of saying “Ok, you can leave this community and go somewhere else.” He said, “No, my child, I still have work to do & I want to do it through you, just trust me to give you the courage.”
“Sometimes when we stay our testimony isn’t about us at all – it’s entirely about Him.” @TeriLynneU #inRL
“God is our refuge & strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
As Angie Smith shared her story, her quote
“Don’t run from an opportunity where God is trying to grow you into a powerful woman of God.” @AngieSmith19 #inRL
hit me hard.
Oh how my tendency is to run when things get hard. But God has been teaching me and trying to grow me in this area.
I cower at confrontation. It’s as simple as that.
When confrontation arises I want to find the darkest corner & curl up into a ball & hide. But I know I can do all things through Christ who gives me Strength.
Instead of running to the dark corner and curling up in a ball I must lean on Him & trust that He will do what He says He will do. And when I do, I can stand tall in His Strength! With each step of obedience to Him I am learning to be more courageous!
I wish I had more time to share with you the many ways (in)RL 2013 ministered to me. Maybe in the next few days I’ll be able to share more but just in case I don’t get a chance I’ll leave you with a few other quotes & lessons that ministered to my soul.
·      Mentors are like anchors; they keep us grounded when things get rough.

15 Lessons Learned Through This Journey Called Marriage

-->

On April 25th 1998 I married the love of my life. During those 15 years we’ve traveled many miles on a journey neither of us could have mapped out for ourselves. There have been joyous mountaintops & dark, deep caverns & everywhere in between but through them all we have grown stronger & deeper in love.
We have leaned on God in the hard times and praised Him in the good times. Through our marriage God has taught me more about myself than I could have imagined. I am forever thankful God placed Jeff in my life.
When I started writing The Calm of His Presence I posted Marriage Monday each week. Over the last year I have moved away from the Marriage Monday post but in honor of our 15th anniversary I wanted to share with you some of what I have learned during our marriage.
15 Lessons Learned Through This Journey Called Marriage
·      God answers the prayers of a little girl beyond what her heart can ever imagine.
·      Prince Charming does exist.
·      The honeymoon stage will pass & when it does hold on tight to God & each other.
·      When times are hard & tensions are high remember we are not each other’s enemy. We love each other & want what’s best for each other & our marriage.
·      There will be times because of illness or surgery where one person has to give completely while the other takes, remember it’s just a season.
·      Before giving criticism find an encouraging word to share.
·      My husband is my 1st confidant. If I need to confide in someone other than my husband it must be a female.
·      Remember to say thank you often.
·      Don’t be afraid to admit when I am wrong.
·      Submitting to my husband doesn’t mean that I am weak.
·      Be my husband’s biggest prayer warrior.
·      Enjoy date night at least once a month.
·      Don’t be afraid to ask someone to watch the kids overnight so that we can have a “stolen moment”.
·      Keep communication lines open when it comes to finances.
·      Give Grace…Grace…Grace…!
What have you learned in your marriage? Leave me a comment and share them with us.

My friend Rachel Wojnarowski wrote a wonderful post on 7 ways to praise your husband for 7 days. I thought her tips went perfectly with today's post so I wanted to share it with you. I'd love for you to take a few minutes to stop by her blog & read what she has to say. While your there take some time to look around & give her some comment love & tell her I sent you.

“Praise the Lord! I will thank the Lord with all my heart as I meet with His godly people.”
Psalm 111:1
This verse was on the bottom of the page where I wrote my Joy Dare list in my gratitude journal today. What a joy it brings to my heart when I spend time with people who love God.
Whether it is having fun at the zoo, taking dinner to a friend who has lost a loved one, grilling out with friends or counseling a friend on the phone who is going through a difficult time; when I am in the presence of someone else who loves God His Glory, His Love & His Goodness shine forth.
I pray that you too have godly people around you.

Continuing to count the Joy Dare #1120 - #1132:
·      Beautiful day at the zoo
·      Overcoming my fear of heights with my daughter
·      Hike in the woods with friends
·      Popcorn, icees & cotton candy
·      Oreos on the way home from the zoo = happy kids
·      Life is Good! God is Good!
·      Working in the yard as a family
·      Kids playing in the sprinkler
·      Playing baseball as a family
·      Frozen yogurt to cool off on a warm afternoon
·      Grilled bratwurst after baseball practice
·      All 4 of us snuggled up in bed watching a movie
·      Sleeping in

Loving those who hurt us

-->
Have you been hurt by someone close to you? Have you felt the sting of betrayal from a close friend? Have you heard the lies whispered behind your back or felt the blows of venom & hate as you were attacked by those who only thought they knew the whole story?
I dare say there isn’t a person who hasn’t at some point & time experienced pain from betrayal, gossip, & lies. In the midst of that pain it is natural to want to lash out & retaliate for the wounds that have been made.
Normal human self-preservation drives us to want to hurt those who hurt us or speak up to defend ourselves when doing so would hurt others.
But Jesus in His Amazing Grace & Love gave us an example of how we are to treat those who hurl accusations, betray, mock, slander & hurt us.
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Luke 23:34
I imagine Jesus up on the cross as
·      soldiers laughed & mocked him & fought over His clothes
·      the criminal who hung next to Him insulted Him
·      the crowd stood by watching & not doing anything to help
and then instead of becoming angry & yelling back at them or wanting to hurt them, He cried out begging God to forgive them. He loved His Father so much that He chose to do God’s Will over His own comfort.
Could you do that? Could I do that?
When those around you hurt you, do you pray for them instead of returning the anger with more anger?
In Matthew 4:43-48 Jesus tells us we are to love our enemies.
“But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:44,45a
Jesus tells us we are to love and pray for those who hurt us.
You may be thinking, “but you have no idea how much I have been hurt, there is no way I could pray for the person who has hurt me.”
Believe me, I know it’s hard; I’ve been there. And when I’ve been there this is what I’ve done:
·      I’ve asked God to soften my heart for them. I’ve asked Him to reveal one way I can pray for them.

·      I’ve prayed Psalm 19:14 “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

·      I’ve stayed focused on Christ and His Love for me on the cross.
When I’ve kept my eyes & heart focused on the Cross, my heart & my mouth have stayed in line with God’s Will.

My prayer is that you too will stay focused on the Cross & Jesus’ example of how to love those who hurt you.

Thankful Thursday ~ God's Power

“But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.’ Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

Has God called you to a task that has completely overwhelmed you?
Are you struggling with a hurt that has cut you like a knife?
Are you burdened with a decision that seems impossible to make?
Are you facing the uncertainty of finances due to a job loss?
Has grief washed over you burying you in your tears?

God is with you! His Power is stronger than any difficulty you face and He is ready to fight your battle for you. He wants to carry you through the dark days.

“Do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God’s…You need not fight in this battle; station yourselves, stand & see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf, O Judah & Jerusalem.’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out to face them, for the Lord is with you.”
2 Chronicles 20:15,17
In Jonah Week 5 we learn that God wants us to win. He goes before us preparing the way. In 2 Chronicles 20 we see Jehoshaphat, King of Israel as he was being attacked by the Moabites, Ammonites & Meunites. Jehoshaphat saw the impossible situation he was in and called out to God. As he faced this threat he turned to God who gave him instructions on what he should do. God had paved the road to victory they just needed to obey His instructions in order to experience His Power of Victory.

“I am amazed to consider the work God does to prepare the way for our obedience. We cannot see the tapestry of divine activity behind the scenes. “ Priscilla Shirer

When we face circumstances more than we can handle we must remember:
·      God doesn’t always call us to tasks that we can easily handle. Sometimes He calls us to tasks too big for us in order to stretch us.
·      God doesn’t always call people equipped for a task but He will equip those He calls.
·      God calls us to a situation He has been working in so that in our obedience we can join Him in His mighty plan.
·      When we call on God in our weakness He will help us face each day through His Power.
Continuing to Count the Joy Dare #1112 - #1119:
·      Rain to wash away the pollen
·      Seeking God’s heart
·      Praying for dear Sisters in Christ
·      Trusting in God’s Strength & Healing
·      Dating my husband
·      Kids spending the night with Grandma
·      God going before us before we knew we needed help
·      Listening to the falling rain.

In His Calm,

Mary
