In the Loop Group luncheon

I’m sitting in front of a white screen with a little black cursor blinking, just waiting for me to type away. But I have no idea how to begin. God has given me a writing day – a day I have wanted for a long time and now I’m scared. Scared I won’t have anything to write. Scared I won’t be able to put into words all that I have going through my mind. Scared that I’ll sound silly as I attempt to tell you all the ways God spoke to me this past weekend.
Saturday I sat in a room with women I admire on so many different levels – writers, bible study leaders, speakers & bloggers. I sat at lunch with women who have families, who work outside the home, who stay at home with their kids, who are married, who are single moms, who are trying so hard to follow God but struggle each and every day to handle all that life throws at us without coming Unglued.

Saturday was a luncheon given by Lysa TerKeurst and her team for Lysa’s In the Loop Group. It was a day of laughter & fun as Lysa answered questions, shared with us some of her favorite things and shared her Unglued message.

Everywhere I turned Saturday God showed up BIG. I met new Sisters in Christ who each touched me in her own little way. I reconnected with ladies I met 3 years ago at She Speaks and I met new friends who spoke encouragement to my uncertain heart. I loved watching God work.

These 4 ladies you see with me are some of the first ladies I met. Prior to the luncheon we submitted questions to be answered by Lysa during her question & answer portion of the day. By having our questions chosen we had the honor of having a reserved front row seat. Amy, Gayle, Shelly & Kim each had great questions. Although I can’t remember each question word for word I wrote down some key points of Lysa’s answers that I will share with you.
·      Invite our kids to fight for something good. Instead of lecturing them on what they should or should not do give them an assignment to research a topic (for example: not texting while driving) and then present it over dinner as a family. This gives them the incentive to take ownership of their choices.

·      When asked to give advice to writers trying to build a platform Lysa told us to ask God in the morning “what is my assignment for the day” and focus on that assignment. When the assignment is completed put it up and move onto other responsibilities for the day. Each day we should make some kind of progress towards our goal.
·      Don’t take a “shot gun” approach to social media. Find the social media sites that best work for you (twitter, facebook, pinterest, instagram) and focus on those. Don’t try to do it all. Use quotes and content from blog posts to encourage traffic to your blog.
·      In order to stay grounded while preparing topics for speaking events, blog posts & books Lysa looks for ways God is specifically speaking to her. As He speaks to her she uses those lessons to share with her readers.

And my question: When you are walking through a storm in your life where God is teaching you some very difficult lessons, how do you know when you should share it with your readers? How do you share all that God has taught you that could benefit others while being mindful of the feelings of those who are personally involved in the storm?
I wish that I had a recording of all that Lysa shared in her answer it was just what I needed to hear, an answer that I can’t do justice to in a few short bullet points but here goes.
·      If you can, ask permission from those involved before sharing with your readers or at an event.
·      Change intimate details of the story that don’t change or affect the moral or teaching point of the message.
·      Wait to share the story until the storm has passed and wounds are healed.
There were also times of laughter as we shared “big hair” pictures and played Lysa’s favorite trivia game Beezerwhizzer.
After Lysa’s Unglued message we moved down to lunch. This was such a fun time of getting to know each other a little more over incredible food catered by Lysa’s favorite restaurant Zoe’s.

After lunch we took time to help Lysa brainstorm for her next book. I loved watching her interact with the ladies as she received suggestions on topics to cover in the book. I can’t put into words how amazing it was to watch a book in the birthing process.

Throughout the day God touched my heart through women I spoke to.

Rachel & I began talking in line for lunch. During that conversation God used her to speak encouragement to me over a decision I have made recently. God knew I was unsure of the direction and used her to speak confidence in following him.

Ah Melissa, Proverbs 31 Online Bible Study leader extraordinaire, I met Melissa 3 years ago at She Speaks- at the time we shared tears over her recent loss of her Mom and my recent loss of my Mother-in-law. We also share a love of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. I loved getting a chance to reconnect with Melissa even if it was for a short time. Melissa is leading a new study on her blog Melissa Taylor, Online Bible Studies coming up very shortly you don’t want to miss it!

Laci is Lysa’s In the Loop Group coordinator. She along with Meredith Brock, did an incredible job coordinating the luncheon. Thank you ladies for a God-filled day.
I know this has been the longest post I have ever written. Thank you for bearing with me and reading my thoughts.
There is so much more I am still processing and can’t wait to watch God work as He unfolds His plan. He has given me a dream -one that scares me to death, gives me butterflies in my stomach, and excites me and makes me want to scream it to the mountaintops -but, its one that He is revealing one baby step at a time. As He slowly reveals it, I trust Him each baby step of the way.
Has God given you a dream that seems unattainable? What can you do to trust Him in the next baby step that He reveals to you?

Mary

God's Grace when I come Unlgued with Him

This week we finished Lysa Terkuerst's Unglued Online Bible Study with Melissa Taylor. As I read the Chapter where Lysa discussed how coming Unglued wasn't necessarily all bad my heart breathed a heavy sigh of relief.

Relief because there are times when I come Unglued with God. And when I say I come unglued with God I mean full blown sobbing, fist pounding, voice raising unglued moments. Its not pretty and definitely a time when its just me and God because if there were any witnesses I'd have some explaining to do.

I don't come unglued with God often. There have only been a few times in my life but one thing I have learned from those moments is they are filled with God's Loving Grace.

One such Grace-moment happened about 6 years ago.

It was a quiet night... nearly midnight as I sat in the middle of my bed...alone. I was 26 weeks pregnant with my daughter, my 18 month old son slept soundly in his bed and my husband sat at the bedside of his Mom, in another city, as she fought for her life while his father fought for his life in a hospital in another city.

Life had absolutely blown apart in the matter of a week.

We went from celebrating our anniversary with a weekend alone & my in-laws watching our son to my father-in-law, who had dementia, having a massive heart attack and the night before his open heart surgery my mother-in-law having a massive brain aneurysm rupture. To say our world had been turned upside down was an understatement.

We didn't know from one day to the next if one or both of them would live or die. The stress of traveling between 3 different cities throughout the state, trying to make some since of their household affairs, and taking care of our kids and home was exhausting. I was in the deepest despair I had ever experienced.

In the dark, quiet, lonely hours of the night I came unglued with God. I sobbed. I questioned. I banged my fists. I begged God to take this pain and stress from us.

And God, in His Infinite Grace let me come unglued with Him. He let me release my pain, sorrow, fear & doubt to Him.

As I was gut wrenchingly honest with Him He slowly calmed me down. While I lay on the bed in the dark of the night with only the sound of the fan whirring above me I felt His Calming Peace wash over me like the peace of a river. I felt His arms wrap around me holding me close to Him. And I felt Him whisper to my soul "Be Still & Know I AM God".

Oh how grateful I am for that unglued moment! For in that Grace-filled moment I found a calming peace with God I had never felt before.

When we allow ourselves to breakdown and become totally, gut wrenchingly honest with God we allow Him to take our pain, our sorrow, our fear & our doubts and turn them into a beautiful tapestry of life.

Thank you Lysa and thank you Melissa & your team for leading us through Unglued. It has been a journey of Imperfect Progress and it has been good!

“As you come to him, the living Stone – rejected by (humans) but chosen by God and precious to him – you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ . . . you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
1 Peter 2:4-5,9
Labels. We all have them. We are all known for something. Some labels are given to us by others; some labels we give ourselves and other labels are given to us by God.
My husband & I have talked a lot lately about what we are known for. We are all known for something whether we know it or not, carrying around labels that are both good and bad.
Others may label us as argumentative, hotheaded, weak, uncaring or kind, generous, faithful, honest. While we may label ourselves as unorganized, shy, insecure, unglued or loving, welcoming, strong, light-hearted.
In chapter 3 of Unglued Lysa TerKeurst shares with us that,
“...labels start out as little threads of self-dissatisfaction but ultimately weave together into a straitjacket of self-condemnation…trapped inside these straitjacket struggles was a girl dying to break free from all the self-defeating labels. Some prisons don’t require bars to keep people locked inside. All it takes is their perception that they belong there. A soul who believes she can’t leave…doesn’t.”
That is where God comes in.
He shatters the negative perception and labels I place on myself.
I love the truth Lysa shared with us,
“It is beautiful when the Master chisels.”
“God is calling us out – out of darkness, out from those places we thought would never get better, out of being stuck.”
He takes me through difficult & sometimes almost unbearable times in my life to break through the rough “stone” and reveal the beautiful “spiritual house” he knows that I am.
His labels for me are far more beautiful than I or anyone else can imagine, “you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, … you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God…” 1 Peter 2:5,9
When I become discouraged I remember that there were people who labeled Jesus as crazy, a lunatic, and a liar.
But God labeled Jesus as the Breath of Life, Salvation’s Choice, Prince of Peace, Fire from Heaven, Glorious Treasure, God Head Trinity, Mediator & Faithful Pastor.
When I keep my eyes & heart focused on God & how He sees me I can overcome any negative labels that I or anyone else may place on me.

Thankful Thursday - The grace to try again...

"But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses,
so that Christ's power may rest on me."
2 Corinthians 12:9

I have a confession...

I suffer from Raw Emotions. My friends would be shocked to hear me say that, but its true. I get hurt easily. I love fully and I am fiercely loyal.

My pattern has been to stuff my hurt feelings and emotions to the outside world but with my husband and children I let it go. It's a pattern I learned as a child. I am not proud of it. It's one I lived in growing up and never did I want my children to grow up living the life of fear that I knew.

Knowing how much I didn't want that life for my children, I made a promise to myself and God, before they were born that I would do whatever I had to not to raise them in those conditions. Although I may not come "Unglued" with my kids & husband the way my father came unglued with us, I am still very aware of my tendencies.

I have tried over and over again to break the cycle. But, time after time I would fail.

When I failed I blamed myself, I beat myself up and I told myself I was a horrible mother & wife.

BUT GOD!!!

He loves me enough to forgive me! He loves me enough to heal me! He loves me enough to change me!

Over the last several years He has taken me through a journey of finding His Calming Presence. Each step of the way has provided a joy like no other.

The most recent journey has been through Lysa TerKeurst's book "Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions". I read this book several months ago as part of a focus group prior to its release. Can I just say Thank You God! Unglued has given me the next steps to take in breaking free from my raw emotions.

Over the last several months I have seen a big change. In the past I would do well for a while - fail - and then go back to my same old habits, frustrated that I could never change. But then I read in Chapter One about "The Hope of Imperfect Progress."

Lysa shared this from her journal:

"Progress. Just make progress. It's okay to have setbacks and the need for do-overs. It's okay to draw a line in the sand and start over again - and again. Just make sure you're moving the line forward. Move forward. Take baby steps, but at least take steps that keep you from being stuck. Then change will come. And it will be good."

And you know what...Change has come! And it has been good!

Whenever I do mess up I remind myself of what she shared:
"Imperfect changes are slow steps of progress wrapped in grace...imperfect progress."
God gives me the grace to try again - and now, I can stop beating myself up - and give myself the grace to try again. Thank you God for your Calming Grace!
